I was wondering if heavy-duty power steering pumps and quick-steer boxes are really worth the money? I'm hoping to get by on the stock pump and box, but if I can't what are my best options?

Dixon, I'm not really sure what you mean when you say "quick steer boxes", that is, which method you're refering to,but here's the deal...............

1) you may use the stock steering gearbox with an aftermarket steering quickener and the stock pump. The aftermarket pumps are nice, but you can get by with the stock pump in a streetstock.

2) There are some aftermaket "stock steering gearboxes" availible with faster ratios, but they are expensive. I would only consider using one of these if the steering quickener was illegal.

3) There are various stock boxes availible with different ratios. I don't know what ratios came on the different cars, the salvage yard should be able to help with that. You may be able to come up with a faster box than you have now.I think the Z28 boxes were faster. But none of the stock boxes are fast enough.

So, in the end I prefer to use the stock box and the aftermarket steering quickener. It is well worth the money. It will save you in a tight spot. If you are running stock steering and the competition has quicksteer,You will be at a disadvantage.

Dixion, try a Jeep Cherokee box. Bolts right in and is 3 turns lock to lock. Youll need another pitman arm though.

I would recomend either the Howe or Afco steering quickners. Since they are light whight and don't take up that much space.

Dixon, Sorry it has taken me so long to reply to your question. I have been away from home for a week and a half. New job requires me to travel.

I personaly have a Afco quicksteer. No problems with it. I really don't know if it is better than the other brands, my supplier carries Afco products, and thats why I bought it.

Just before I left, I noticed that CustomPerformance had a used quicksteer on the Dirt Auction for 75 bucks. About half price. There were no bids at the time,I don't know if it sold or not. You could send him a PM and find out.

Good Luck
