I am putting in new push rod w/hydrolifters
stock.I followed the directions in a book that i have. It said to tighten down until
all the slack is out. Then one full turn and that all. the book said that all you do.
I know you do this each {TDC}is up. But after
doing this to all. Some of the pushrods still had slack in them.Do i need to tighten them again.

You have to be careful doing this b/c you can mess up a cam pretty quick. Too loose is better than to tight. At TDC on each piston, take out the slack (no more) in each rocker. Fire it up and, one at a time, loosen each rocker until it starts clattering, than just tighten it back until it stops making noise. Adjusting them the other way never works for me. You get down, turn the engine over and still have loose ones. I'm using mechanical lifters this year, so I won't have to follow my own advice.

We always go 1/2 turn max after the slack is out of the pushrod. I agree that I have had better luck adjusting while the motor is running. Its just a little messy.

Always best when motor is warm and running like the other guys are saying. I back it off until it starts to clatter then tighten it until the clatter stops, then tighten a 1/4 turn more. That should do it for ya.

I adjust like miller does. Loosen until it clatters, tighten till it stops, then 1/4 more turn.

make sure you get oil slingers or you will have oil everywhere if you do it running. up idle a little, sometimes engine will die if at idle

The half valve cover works real well, but if you're really cheap and really lazy (I've been known to be both), you can put duct tape on each rocker. But that's only if you're cheap, got no valve cover to cut and in a pinch.

This is the best way i have found to adjust valves cold. I have used this method for years. With the engine assembled and all adjusters loose align timing pointer tdc with no.1 cyl.on compression stroke.Now take a white marker and mark the balancer in 4 places 90deg.apart with the tdc mark being the top mark. these marks donot have to be exactly 90deg. just look at your balancer and divide it into 4 quarters with marks. you are now ready to adjust the valves on no1.cyl.tighten adjuster to zero lash. with hyd.lifters 1/4to1/2 turn past zero lash is best.this keeps the lifter plunger near the top;so it can't pump up and hold your valves open. Now turn engine normal direction to the first 1/4 mark on balancer is at timing pointer and adjust valves on next firing order. turn engine 1/4 turn to next mark and adjust next firing order.this system works on any only need to know firing order. 2 full revolutions of engine(v/8)complete the process.this also works to adjust valves on flat-tappet & roller cammed engines. hope this helps. ps. if your installing new lifters place them in a container of oil overnight before assembly. zero lash is hard to determine on a empty hyd.lifter.
