I know we used to mix the racing fuel and pump gas in our 10-1 motors we used to run, does anyone else do this?

I used a 10% mix of toluene with 91 octane. Worked pretty good. I was tested once, however, and it tested to be about the same specific gravity as racing gas. Got to http://www.wauknet.com/douthitt/pumpgas.htm for a good article on pump gas.

The biggest misconception people have with racing fuel is that higher octane = more power. With a low compression motor, racing fuel can actually COST you power. The octane rating is a measurement of the fuel's ability to resist detonation (dieseling/pinging). Some of the additives in racing fuel that stop detonation accomplish this by slowing down the rate of burn. You don't want to get the octane higher than you actually need it.

For a flat top piston motor with low cc heads, you can play it safe by mixing pump gas with a little racing fuel. In a 5 gallon jug, if you start with 2 gallons of 110 octane fuel (like Turbo Blue or Unocal) and cut it with 3 gallons of premium 93, your octane rating will be near 100. A flat top motor will live all day long on this mix.

Hope it helps....
