been awhile since I put a motor together. When installing the hei distributer the motor should be at tdc and the rotor pointing to the number one cylinder? am I correct on this? Thanks

Don't forget, the piston must be at TDC on the COMPRESSION stroke, or else the distributor will be firing 180 degrees off.

Yes , we phase our rotor's ! Rotor phasing is much too often overlooked ! It's amazing how many new distributors will be firing off to one side of the terminals !

In the interest of educating a dumb pollock, can you give a brief description of "rotor phasing" SDHNC29? Are you refering to indexing you distributor housing where your terminals would be aligned, then making sure your rotor is pointed (centered) at those marks for ever 45* of rotation? How do you ajust the rotor? Is this done after the timing is set, etc.? Thanx for the help.

Rotor phasing is making sure that your dist. rotor is pointed directly at the dist. cap terminal . Here is how you do it ............. Take an old dist. cap , drill a hole next to your number one terminal . Do not drill your hole off to either side of the terminal , but just above it toward the center of the cap . Next , time your engine . After your timing is set , take your timing light and look through the hole that you drilled in the cap , as the engine is running . If your rotor is phased correctly , then your rotor tip will be pointed directly at the cap terminal . With a mechanical advance dist. , the tip should be slightly to one side , and when your advance pulls in , the rotor tip should travel across the terminal . With a fixed advance , as I would recommend , your rotor tip should be pointed directly at the cap terminal at all times . If your rotor tip is not correctly phased and firing from one side of the terminal , then it will be necessary to move your mag pick up in the dist , or adjust your breaker plate accordingly . If you have a MSD dist. with an adjustable rotor , then simply turn the rotor to make the proper adjustment .

I would recommend that this is checked in any race engine . If the rotor phasing is not correct , and the rotor tip is too far off of the cap terminal , then this could cause cross firing in the dist. at high RPM .
