What's is normal for bearing wear in race engines. I torm mine down and the bearings on one of the caps was wore down past the first layer into the copper. Some of the bearings were slightly worn on the others but not nearly as bad. I use 20-50 and change it after every 3rd race. Is the crank junk? Need ground? Clearance problem? Thanks

ryan, in a perfect world theoreticlly brgs should last forever, because the crank surface never really rides on the bearing surface ,it is always riding on a very thin wedge of oil. cold startups, contamination, higher loads, generated by racing etc., is what cause bearing wear. hope this helps.

ryan, that does not sound like excessive wear at all. Your crank should polish up just fine. I would just have it mag'd as a precaution and then polished.

Was only one of the main cap bearings wore down? what it the bearing under the crank
or on top of the crank? Then exactly where on the bearing was it wore down - laying the
bearing on your work bench like it lays in the block, what location on the bearing was it wore at? For example, on a underside cap
bearing:

| | <----+
| | <----+could be detination
------

Also, for that woren bearing, what did the
connecting rod bearings in its vencenity look like? Were they woren too?

It was wore on most of the bearing the center was worse than the outsides .I think it was on the #3 cap on the top and bottom. Rod bearings pretty much all looked the same .

Both

Ryan, if the wear pattern is across the width of the bearing, chances are the crankshaft journal is too small. If the wear pattern is lengthwise to the bearing, suspect contamination from foreign material. Good luck racin'. Homer
