Not sure what everyone else does. But I keep the gaps 180 degrees apart.

I put the top ring gap closest to the intake valve, & the 2nd 180 from that. Someone once told me that was the furthest from heat & would make them last longer?

Didn't the rings come with instructions. All the Total Seal rings that I have bought come with instructions for their preferred ring placement. I would do whatever the ring manufacturer suggested.

I've never figured out why there are so many different placements. When I tear a motor down, they all have seemed to move around anyway.

This is true. LOL. Thats why I just start with the gaps as far apart as possible so theres less chance of them getting close or lining up.
