.040 should not really hurt the block..I run .030 and have problems. Just remember to do research on anything that will help keep the motor cool.

I have ran several .060 over 350's,wouldnt go that far with a 400.

sideways ive been boring them 040 and 060 for many yrs it will be ok but did read somewhere that older blocks pre79 are more substansial in the cyl wall area dont know for sure tho... they can sonic test them if you are wanting to but im sure thats expensive and not really feasible in most cases

Here's what you do if your worrying about it getting hot you run an aluminum radiator with large tubes and run water wetter from red line oil. This will help you alot. I have run many .060 over bore engines.
