One possibility....check the play in your distributor. If you have an intake that has been milled you need to check to make sure your distributor has plenty of play in it. You may be forcing the pump shaft down too tight. I have seen that before. What kind of motor are you running?

If your using a big block high volume pump , then yes , I've seen it happen . The ones that I've seen broken , or more commonly cracked , are busted in the corner where the machined flat surface for the pump bolt meets the pump housing . You will usually find a very sharp machined corner there . We found that if you radius this , it will help the pump last a little longer . But as you said , this is normally a problem for guy's who run on very rough tracks , probably because of the weight of the pump . I've never seen this problem with a small block pump .
