We are putting together a Factory Stock. We are thinking of using a 302, what would be the best tranny to put behind this motor?

i use the all aluminum SROD 4 speed overdrive. it's very similiar to a top loader only in has internal shift linkage and 4 gear is overdrive. i remove 2nd gear and 4th gear and machine the 2nd and 4th gear off the cluster gear as well. this makes a lightweight all aluminum 2 speed. they have been very durable for me. you'll find them in 79-82 mustangs with I-6's and v-8's and some pick-ups of the same time period.

careful the v8 ones are the only ones that have the correct input shaft, the 6 cyl ones are too long and can not be shortened easy

i made a 5/8" thick solid aluminum spacer to put between the trans and the bell housing. you can also put the short input shaft from the truck trans into the mustang trans. all the mustang trans' have the longer input, incl. the v-8's. this is to accomodate the cable actuated release bearing that the mustang uses. the truck trans' have a slave cylinder that actuates the release bearing.
