The HEI is an excellent unit, working fine until around 6 to 6200 as a stock unit.
There are many upgrades you can do yourself by in stalling a good cap, rotor, and coil kit. Performance Distributors from Memphis,Tn has complete units or parts to up grade your unit. I like Jacobs products as I have them to be a bit pricey, but quality stuff.
The HEI likes to work with a fully charged battery,so run the alternator( single wire) or make sure your battery is fully charged at all times.
The weakest part of the HEI is the module, when it goes, you stop. Carry an extra one just incase.
Alot of people do not spend anytime dealing with the HEI,but it is a key element in making that motor run.
