ok guys, i sold my car, thanks to here! I am thinking about building a new one this winter from scratch. I can get either a new metric style (like an '83 olds cutlass) or an older style ('77 monte carlo) for cheap, the rules where i race allow either car. Which car should i go with, and why? Thanks for all the help, the dirt forum has been invaluable to me!

for one id probably go with the olds because its probably easier to find parts for. Try having a 73 Nova, body panels are pretty much exstinct out here. Eddie

i would go with the metric for two reasons one redneck hit on finding parts cars the other is the weight there are guys in the area that are still running the old monte and malibu's on the short tracks 1/4 and 1/3 with some luck but on the 1/2 miles it's another story if you don't have a weight rule you can't go wrong with the metric

what is the wheelbase on a metric though? we have to have a 114 inch wheelbase, and weigh 3000 lbs.

Knowing parts are getting hard to find for the 70 models I'd go with the 77. The 70 models are heavier and they'd run better on the track. I know other races that went to the smaller cars the 80 models and they wished they'd kept there but in a 70's model cause the older cars handles better. But it's up to you..

toss up. metric faster. long body tougher (last longer). the tradeoff is speed verses durabilaty. im going metric this year but im worried about the frame lasting all year.

the wheelbase on a metric is 108 inches so you will be SOL on that if you need 114"

I, personally, have raced both and thought this: the longer cars were smoother and I thought handled better than the metrics. The metrics are smaller, lighter and if you can get them set up they go fast. But they are harder to set up. They both are good cars though and will work for you regardless of the one you choose. There should be plenty of info on the Forum to make your new ride a fast one!

merlin all midsize metrics are 108 a metric impala has the big wheelbase and they are easier to come by them a early 70's monte you might want to look for one of those i sure would if i had to run big cars

Go with the metric ,when you wrinkle your body you can slap on a newer monte carlo body
and look good because we all know looks are everything.
