My friend told me it would be better to weld my spider gears where both tires spin all the time. Is that a good thing?

Yes It is a good thing if it is legal in your class. The car handles much better, you will get more traction with two wheels turning than just one which will make you faster, also you can change your handling by changing stagger. Just make sure that whoever welds them knows what they are doing and they lay a nice strong weld down.
Good luck

Welding them is a great idea. I like it better than a mini spool (way to much money and when changing axles the c clips are a pain to get in and out, always in the dark after breaking an axle in the heat) just turn up the amperage and weld, make sure the axle gears are against the thrust washers.
