mounting the springs on top of the axle will only change the rate at the wheel, basically allowing for a softer spring, having the springs on the swingarm puts more stress on the bar and rod ends. mounting one spring in front usually lr and rr behind causes wedge to be added as the axle rotates under acceleration, basically it depends on what you are tring to accomplish and packaging, i've seen them run in numerous different configurations sucessfully.

Also you get away from the constant work of maintaining the coil over eliminators.
