How do they water the track were you run? Dose it stay all night or do they water from time to time thought the night to keep dust down?

The track I race at is a good fast and smooth ˝ mile. The racing surface seams to keep grip all night without any additional watering needed to keep dust down. However the last few weeks we have been late getting started because the track was too wet and it is even a little greasy when the first couple of heats start. This may be more a question for owners of other tracks but, what is your typical process for preparing the track? What seems to work and what doesn’t?

I don't know about whats right to do and neither do the owners.wet most of the time and dry black slick by the end of the night.What track you run at I run at hartford soeedway in southwest mich.

I run at Ionia Raceway Park (formerly I-96 Speedway), half way between Lansing and Grand Rapids in Michigan. I don’t have any real complaints about the track in general. As a matter of fact I feel it is probably the best all around dirt track to run in the area. There are large car counts, good purses, great racing surface, and very completive racing.

I understand that a dirt surface has to be a little tricky to get “just right” and is always going to get dryer and slicker as the night goes on. And I will say that 90% of the time the track here still has plenty of grip by nights end. Most of these delays have been caused by weather, these are just the nature of an outdoors event. Just a couple were a misjudgment of preparation.

I was just hoping to generate some input on tips of track preparation from some that has been doing this awhile.

have been involved in our local track prep. for a few years, including the night before racing.
we would normally rip the track with grader & completely soak with water on the friday night, about 8-10 truck loads of water.
then rip and continue to just lightly spray with water during the day of saturday (before racing) then grade from inside of track out and then grade from outside back in towing a roller about an hour before racing. then maybe just a light cut and spray with water (approx.20min) just before features.

wouldn't know if it's right or wrong though.

i've helped out prep for a long time with my friends dad and we always graded her sunday morning and let it set till thursady nite then soaked her pretty good and packed it in with a sheeps foot then on friday hit her with a spring tooth to loosen it up and wet her doen again and packed that with a wobble wheel then saturday morn about 10ish start to water again and run bolth the sheeps foot and wobble wheel while the water turck watered then about 1 just water till 3 then we pack her in with all the cars going backwards and hotlaps start at 6. biggest thing i have seen is you need to run your small tired cars first or it will cap off real fast then all that moisture is trapped under the rubber and packed dirti have seen nite when they ran late models first and it was like ice but 2 inches under the surface you could make mud balls with it
