Thank you for having this forum so I can get more information on historical practices.

I work for a consulting firm. I have a site in Alabama which, according to an "old timer" hanging around the site, used to have a dirt track. The track shows up in aerial photographs in the early 60s through the early 70s. He recalled how they used to climb the trees to watch the races from over the fence. What concerns me is that he said they used to spray the track down with oil. I assume this was to keep the dust down. Can anyone tell me about this practice? Was it between every race? What kind of oil was it? Used motor oil? How was it applied to the track?

Any information you might could lend would be most appreciated.

Thank you,

I dont know anything about the site you are refering too. However I seriosly doubt that they were spraying oil on the track. And if they were then it would have to be only once per race night.
