It takes a micrometer and a telescopic bore diameter tool. The proper name has escaped me momentarily. This tool looks like a "T". The branches extend independantly like a telescope to fit the bore. They come in different sizes.

You will need to take a measurement several times until you are sure that you have it acurate. It takes a bit to get the feel for getting the tee directly center in the bore. The micrometers are used to measure the other tool.

Another, more acurate, alternative is to get some inside micrometers which are costly.

A way to get in the neighborhood but not get an acurate measurement is to get a good machinist rule and measure across the bore. It's not acurate, but if you are just trying to find the neiborhood it will do.

Have a local machine shop make you a gauge for making the checks quick. The guage should be just oversize so if it fit you were illegal, simple as that. Takes longer to get an air clearer pulled.

If you really wanted to know how much you could go that micrometer route.

Don't you mean undersize on the o.d., if the gauge was oversize it seems that it wouldn't fit inside the bore.

I did mean oversize so if it fits in an "
"oversized" venturi of a carb then it would be illegal for a 390. If it doesn't fit you're OK.
