I am (finally) getting to build my very own
shop. I have just purchased some land in the
country and wanted some advice/input on
SIZE, SHAPE, etc. I was planning on putting
frame hooks in the slab ,of course. I also
thought the air compressor should be outside.
I plan on having a full bathroom and probably a living area.
any pros and cons on frame type: wood posts or all steel ?
any ideas or help would be appreciated.

Whatever kind of frame you build, make sure you put your doors to where the wind can blow through the best.My former employee had two 80x60 shops. One was built north/south and the other east/west. Since most of the summertime breeze blows south to north, that shop was always at least 15 degrees cooler than the other one.

lots of light,
heated and air conditioned
super smooth level floor for chassis setup
enclosed engine assembly room,
good sound system
bathhroom W/ shower,
laundry room,
kitchen, living room, bedroom (for when the wife says you spend more time with that car than her)
I could go on and on

Basically a six car garage with attached house.

And if you don't live in the south a heated floor is real nice and something to consider when building...just wish I had one!!

When you put your stakes in the ground and you think you have the size you want, ADD 20 more foot to it. When you start to put all your stuff in it, your buddys will all help by bringing there crap over, it wont be big enough. The key is to get a shed for just racing parts, keep the mowers and tractors in a second shed with all your wifes crap. That way you can still "borrow" her's for use in the winter time for storing spare tires and body panels..

One thing I see all to often is not enough room between the garage door openings and the wall. 3 feet is nice. anything less and the cabinets or equipment is protruding into the door opening. You have less freedom when aranging the garage. With the 3 feet room your not limited to placment on most big things. BFFR Fridge!!

A liquor bar with a brass pole in the center will help lure your buddies over and while their there you can put them to work. This way your car will be ready to go racing by Wednesday and you want be working on it Saturaday morning.

Don't get a cheap slab. Mine is cracked and uneven and we fight with it ever week when scaling the car.

BUMPSTEER,

thanks for the info ,guys ....
LMAO at the brass pole idea

does a square floor plan offer more space?
50x50 = 2500 40x60 = 2400
(each have 2000 linear ft of wall )

I can never get any work done once the buds show up with the suds. If your shop is next to your house, put a urinal in like I did. It keeps the stink down, and none but the tallest women can use it!

Come on guys...keep it out of the gutter....

We are working on putting up a new 40 x 80 here soon. I plan on putting recesses in the floors for our scales so we dont have to use any ramps to scale our cars.....
