I run a 5500 watt porter cable. Bought it for under $500 new 2 years ago and have never had a prob w/ it. It has a 10hp techumse(?) motor and is LOUD. The quietest I have heard is a Honda motor(gonna cost you though).

I would have to vote for the hondas too. All of the quiet ones I have seen are honda power. Big money though

Check out Central Maine Diesel for deals. I just bought a 3600watt Honda for $795 in the door. Saw the exact same generator other places for over a thousand. Purrs like a kitten. Well, maybe like a Bobcat, but it is not objectionable at all.

YAMAHA makes a super generator also. You are gonna spend some money, but you get what you pay for!! I have a yamaha 2600 watt gen & it runs 4 4' florucent lights, 3 300 wat halogen outside lights, radio, batt charger, & electric inpact with no problems. If you get a chance to look at one, do so.

As faras quieting down a generatorwhy not put 2 or 4 mufflers on it? Most have 3/4 pipe threads which you can s crew( they wont let you use that word) a pipe into with a tee on the end of it. Then just attach 2 mufflers going in different directions.

I have a 3000/6000Watt Power Inverter on 3 deep cycle marine batt's.... Super quiet (no noise at all) runs everything I have.... compressor, lights, fan etc... Pretty reasonable at
I set it up so that the Bat's charge off of the alternator... this setup has worked for 1.5 years so far!

I have a Makita 5500 electric start. works great. Expensive? yes $1250 heavy? VERY. But when the power goes out at home I can run my whole house on it!
