ok guys, I know this has been talked about several times, but I cant find the answers. I need to know the 2nd gear ratios for the 2 ring and 3 ring gm 3 speed transmissions. the tool box doesn't have them

thanks

Whenever you do not have access to information that tells you the transmission ratios according to the "lines" on an input shaft, the simple alternative is to determine the ratios for yourself. Simply place the transmission into the desired gear (example=2nd gear), make a mark on the input shaft and on the output shaft, then turn the output shaft ten revolutions while counting the revolutions that the input shaft makes. If the input shaft makes 15 revolutions to the 10 that you turned the output shaft, then you have a transmission with a 1.50 second gear ratio. Whatever the number is...just divide by ten and that's the ratio. Of course you can estimate the same way by just turning the output one revolution, but by turning ten times you get a much more acurate figure for the ratio. Usually whenever I take posession of a used transmission I'll figure out the ratios for each gear with this method and mark them with a paint marker right on the transmission case so I know what I've got at a quick glance.

just be aware the three liner has a fine and fragile tooth patterm in 2nd gear. after three breaks we moved to a muncie 3 speed and have never looked back
