We weighed the factory FORD disk set on one of our cars. We found that with everything including the backing plate the drum brakes were lighter, the disks had better acceleration. After market disk setup's are ALOT lighter than the factory stuff.
I have seen the aluminum drums on E-bay but they are $$$$ I think they sold for well over $300.

Go to www.quickperformance.com, they have the backing plates with the brakes already installed for around $100 (pair), and they bolt to your 9" ford housing with no trouble. By the way you save 5lbs per drum cast)when you go this route, and 10lbs per drum if you use the aluminum drums, I know because I weighed everything on a ups scale.
ford drum-19lbs
GM cast drum-14lbs
GM alum. drum-9lbs
