Dropped in a GODZILLA motor last week and had a very difficult time hooking it up last night. I generally run a 6:20 on a 4/10 and turn about 6800. This motor is much more sensitive to the throttle and had to be feathered coming out of the corner or the tires would break loose.
After the race my buddies were saying that the car was a rocket past the flagstand, but looked like it needed more coming out--maybe a 6:33.
I'm all the while thinking..."man if I had a 5:83 I could get in the trottle and the car woud leave the corner and wouldn't spin so easily."
Opinions or experience?

I agree with you, a 5.83 or a 6.00. What your friends were seeing is what you could do once you could get in the gas.

Agreed. What they were seeing was the result of your throttle control. Sounds like less gear might equal more bite coming out in your case.

If you're spinning coming out of the corner with 6.20's....it'll spin MORE with the 6.33's.
We have had great results with 83's on a 4/10 track. But then again, we dont turn any more than 6300 rpm's. That's by choice though. I think alot of people are under the impression that you need to turn monsterous rpm's to go fast which is not true. I have gone by MANY cars that are turning 6800 or more while we were turning 6000-6300 because we werent spinning our tires.
Just a thought. good luck

See here is where i will have to disagree with everyone on the gearing.

I usally go with alot deeper gear then most cause I get more forward bite comming off the corner IF you do go with alot taller gear and IF the tires do break loose they REALLY break loose possibly try something differnt in your setup to get more bite comming off OR tighten the car up alittle more comming off.
once you get that thing to hook up you will be right where you need to be rpm wise Plus with a lower gear you can go in alot harder then most people and use less brake to get the nose of the car down going into the corner to get it to turn if its really slick out.

If the motor is that much stronger, you're going to need to work with getting more weight in it.

I was thinking the same thing-more rear and I don't know what shocks you run, but tie downs mights help also.

I agree with Iowa Dirt track Girl, throw some more gear at it and it will hook harder.

ITS AGE OLD THE ANSWER IS MORE MOTOR LESS GEAR THE 83 SHOULD BE JUST RITE IF THATS NOT ENOUGH GO TO STRONGER SECONDARY SPRINGS IN YOUR CARB.

The gear was the ticket! Set fast time and a new track record, beating the old by almost 7 tenths. Didn't get to race de to an open wheel tearing down the lights. www.speedwayvideos.net/videos/outofthepark.wmv

I had a 620 in all season and changed to a 583 for the last race....so I guess that would be taller?

Im confused, are you guys talkin about final drive numbers or simply gear ratios. I run 719 final drive # and have won 7 races of 13 entries >(3 dnfs /3 2nds). we run a common 355 and turn about 6700 tops

I'd try a 65 now and see if it goes faster. The longer legs will free things up some going in......make you alot faster going in usually. It will keep the car glued instead of wheel hopping on rubbered over tracks also.
