The problem Iam having is not enough rpms. Iam currently running a 383 with 5.43 gears. Iam turning 6000 rpm at the end of the straights. I run on a high bank 1/2 mile. The cam is out of IMCA Modified, Maybe the problem? Other than that just getting burned on the starts/restarts. Any help would be great.
Thanks

are you spinning on the starts? maybe clutch is slipping. with the stroker you should be getting a good start. when delta bowl was open it wasnt quite a 1/2 but we were running a 6.00 gear and was turning around 6600-6800..

what kind of heads are you running, assuming timming and carb are right..

Not spinning the tires at all. No clutch slipping. I thought about running 5.83 or even a 6.00 gear but that might hurt me more. the heads I am running are darts with 215 runners - 64cc. I think i'll try the cam. Thanks

try to borrow a gear, maybe a 5.67 or 5.83. That should pick up a few hundred RPM's.

Is this an IMCA stock car? If so it sounds like you probably need a different carb. I would talk with kp on this forum about building one for you. I know that you can get atleast an extra 300 rpm from the carb alone. Sounds like a carb problem or possible a cam issue. Are you farely close to other cars on gear? What is the competition running. If the track is 1/2 mile I would think that you would be able to get way more than 6,000 rpm out of it. Sounds like the engine or carb is running out on you IMO.

Good Luck!!

Racer17j, your funny. The real way to get your final gear is take your gear ratio for the gear in the tranny you are running and X it by the gear ratio in the rearend. Example 1.86 X3.73= 6.9378. 6.93 would be the final. To get your # out of the tranny. Turn the tailshaft 10 time's and count the # of time's the front shaft turn's. If the front turn's 15 time's, that gear is a 1.5 ratio. 15 divided by 10 is 1.5. Same goes with the rear gear. Time's the both and you get the final. MAKE SURE YOU DO ALL THE GEARS AN THE TRANNY AND WRITE THEM DOWN SOMEWHERE.

Third gear will always be 1 to 1. What gear are you using? I'm running in second with a 3.73 rear gear and a final of 6.20 on a 3/8th semi-bank.

Racer17j is right. the saginaw is a 1.00:1 ratio in third, meaning whatever the rear end gear is, is also the final ratio...so fastmod5's final ratio is 5.43.

sure, the ratio will be different for each gear, but i doubt he'll be running in second on a 1/2 mile with 5.43 gears.

I just replaced the cam in the engine. I'll reply back to see how it goes.
Thanks for all the help.
