So I'm sitting in the staging line Friday nite and I notice my volt meter is sitting on 16 at idle and pegs out at 18 when I rev the motor (it usually stays at 14 all the time). I went ahead and ran the feature without incident or even a heated up wire. I run an older alternator with an external voltage regulator so I think the regulator took a dump on me.

Question is, did I hurt any of my electrics by running at 18 plus volts? Every circuit on my car is fuse protected and none blew, so I think everthing is fine, but I'm looking for other opinions.

Also, if I can't get this problem fixed befor this weekend, will it hurt the alternator if I just unhook it from the system (I need to leave it on the motor as an idler for the water pump) and let it run wild? Will running the alt with no regulator burn the little guy up or not?

Buckle up, here we go debating alternators again. While we're at it, just discuss pinion angle, electric fans, nylon brake lines and plastic fans.

Thanks for the input, I wasn't to worried about 18 volts, I was concerned about the alternator running wild.

I had a voltage reg that did like yours and it didn't hurt anything except my battery.

This was in my work truck, not a race shouldn't hurt your battery being it isn't ran for long distances.
