A friend of mine is building a hobbystock for this year and we are wondering what to run for a final. The track we race at is a short 3/8 medium banked. The streetstocks are mostly geared between 680 and 740 with 255/70/15s. His clas is using IMCA hobby rules so they are stuck with the 205/70/15s.
Thanks
Nick

most new drivers tend to do better with the lower ratio just because its easier to drive.
Higher ratios have better accel but tend to break the tires loose very easily especially on narrow tires. .

Well depending on what your motor needs to turn if it needs to turn about 6800 then a 683 will work if it needs to turn about 6500 then 650 between that you could run a 666

I run 6:50 on a 3/8 high bank tacky track, with a 355 engine.

if your running imca rule 650 would be push'n it i'd start at a 620 most3/8 around here the popular ratio is 6.20-6.33 that will piut you in the 6800 range

When running at boone a 683 will turn you about 6800 thats a 3/8 mile

i would ask around at the track you want to run. different banking, track surface and track conditions play a big part in gear selection.

not to mention cam playing big part in gear selection--I ran same track for two years same motor, different cam, first cam had to run 5.83s, next cam (very similar on paper) had to run 5.43s

This is the first year that they are running hobbys at our track so we have to start from scratch.
