how's it done and is it something that an amateur can do? i've heard it's something that has to be done perfect or else it doesn't work at all. the rearend is a ford 9 inch.

You can buy a Mini Spool for a 9" for $20 well worth the $$$.

i agree it would only save a couple of dollars to weld them and it would cost more to have them welded get the mini spool. if it was a gm id say weld because there mini's are more expensive but on 9" get a mini or a full spool.

if its a gm rearend use a high nickle welding rod. its stronger then mig welding or using 6011

It would be advisable to get a moly pin for that 9" ford mini spool also. Trust me.

forget the mini spool for the smaller gm rearends. I bought 2 of them at 100.00 for each. Both broke right where the axels go into the splines. Also the square blocks that make up part of the spool have a nasty habit of rocking back and forth and tearing up the spool also. This spool is nothing even close to the one for the fords.
