From the original start or single file start what gear is your transmission in when the green flag drops ? Be it a 350 turbo, power glide or what ever. The problem is im getting killed on the starts. We have a strong 406 , power glide tranny and 6.00 gear in a nine inch ford. Ive tried starting in low and high both and cant get the rpm's to come up quick enough to stay with everyone else into turn one from a rolling start. thanks

Huummmmmm.........when I ran pure stock, I had a 10 bolt chevy rear with 3.73 gears and a glide tranny. I ran it in 1st gear the whole time. The final drive is 6.56. It worked great, no problems on starts or anything. This was also a high banked 1/4 mile track and I kept it on the outside, so that was 3/8 mile I belive. You could try replacing your rear gear with a 6.50. Thats what almost everyone in my area is running as far as final drive is around 6.50. Hope that helps.

If your turns are really tight and you lose alot of speed and rpm's through the turns you might can go a little lower (numerically higher) on the rear gears. I sold my car to a friend and started running open wheel mods and he was running a tight turned 1/4 mile slick track and we were going to change to a 4.11 gear to help corner exit. Thats a final drive of 7.23. We never did it(another story) so I don't know how it would have worked. Anyways...glad I could help!

You may have a carb or timing prob. if it wont take off in low with a 600 gear in the back. That's about 10-1. It sould pull like a mule!!!!

I don't think I'd want to spin my 406 too hard...a 6.33 is about as tall as I would go on a 3/8ths, But I don't have a really "good" motor...(Scat, Speed-Pro, etc)

Timming was another problem i was thinking of also. A degree wheel was not used. It set in the motor straight up and then advanced 34 with a timming light. It takes off good in low but spins the tires alot. Then When i shift into high it seemes to loose alot of rpm's. The carb is a 750 holley With a new main body. The lower end of the motor has good parts. The tires we use are dot's that roll out 84 to 86.

I had the same problem this year. When I started in low, I'd have to shift while still in the turn, which would break the tires loose. If I started in drive, I'd be too low RPM and get pulled on the start. I needed more gear, but never got it sorted out. Next year!!!!!

I run at devils bowl 1/2 mile high bank when we had dot tires we had to run 6.33 final to accelerate off corners. now we run asphault take offs and had to switch to 6.00 too keep rpms under 7500. also carb problem will greatly effect rolling start.
