Not meaning to sound stupid, but what is the proper procedure for checking you coil spring rate? I have access to a checker.Do you preload the spring or what?

speedway65,on my spring rate checker the inst. reads, preload spring to 200 # tap spring lightly to make sure the guage stays on the 200# preload.Set the pointer on the ruler on the side of the upright & compress the spring 1 " then read the guage. If the reading is 1000# then subtract the 200# preload & you have a 800# spring.Works the same on standard & coilover springs. cd2

speedway65, a friend uses his spring checker diffrent. He sets spring in the checker, tightens it just so it touches, sets pointer jackes it 1" checks the guage reading & jacks it one more inch, takes overall reading & subtracts the first reading & this is the spring rate.We get the same rate on the same spring, two diffrent brands of raters. Just be very careful you do not want a spring to jump out of the checker when compressed. cd2
