I have a friend that makes a living as a welder and he hasn't been very busy lately. he said that steel basically trippled in price because china is going threw an industrial revolution of sorts and bought 6 months of future steel a couple months ago. one of my sponsors is a s**** yard and a year ago they were getting somewhere around $55 a ton for s**** steel and all summer they've been getting around $160 a ton. Just what I've heard also heard the price of steel wheels has gone up and some suppliers aren't carring them due to the high cost.

I am in the steel business also. Not only has steel gotten expensive, it has gotten hard to get. The steel mills have started giving allocations to suppliers and some of the products that they used to make they have stopped making. The biggest problem is the Chinese are buying up all the s**** so the mills can't even get the material to make steel. There is virtually no "new" steel made anymore, it is all recyled. S**** yards are paying record prices for steel. The mills are dropping products with the lowest profit margins. There were steady price increases late spring and early summer then it mellowed and we were all afraid the prices would drop dramatically and we would be sitting on hundreds of tons of steel that we payed more for than we could sell it for. Then came the HUGE august 1st increase and another September 1st. And we are in a business where we bid and win a job months before we start it, and guess what,we (and many others) got hurt big time with the increases. This is also going on with concrete. The Chinese are buying up all the cement. Awful lot of private industry being expanded or built for a country supposed to be communist!!

the same thing is happening to steel prices here in australia due to the demand from china. 57% price increase since may.
but i'm led to believe there constructing a massive dam (don't know how many billions of dollars worth), they're constructing facilities for the next olympic games (probably a billion dollars)and a new formula one standard race track (several hundred, million dollars worth).
i guess all that construction stimulates a pretty substantial growth in a country's economy.

My buddy has a rag and metal here in Michigan, With the prices being high he has alot of people turning stuff in,
His yard is full, and he said the places he takes it to, they are full also.
He said the foundries using it are not taking in as much as they can.
It sounds like they are trying to keep the price high.
