I am currently using a sag 3 speed. I will be changing gears for next year so need some advice.
I currently run in second, well some of the guys say that it is better to run taller gears in third gear that it is better on the tranny and that it reduces rotating weight in the tranny???
would you advise this or just stick to 2nd gear??

it does not remove rotating weight i have heard that it doesn't use as much hp since you are not changing gear ratios drastically like low or 2nd but to me i think that it all washes out in the end

the idea of that i believe is to run high (1:1 ratio) so that there is no reduction on the trans but change ratio in the rear axle but in some cases i have seen you can not get the gears to go that low...

drive hard or drive home

The 1 to 1 will make a difference in power at the rear wheel. But as toolman said some rearends is hard to find that low gear.

something to think about with the second gear reduction you spin the driveshaft and the trans. parts much less and the motor does all the work .

So it will be better to run in third as long as I can get the short gears?? I was planning on just buying the gears that I need to get the ratio.
I run 6.50 in second right now, what is the third ratio?? haft to figure out what gears I would need.
also what is the second gear reduction?? would that be a good rout to go?? does anyone know of anywhere that would make lighter gears or even drilled shafts or anything like that?? just trying to see whats all avalable out there.

any trnsmission (other that overdrives) has a high gear of 1 to 1 in which case you would run a 6.50 rear end gear.
