We run the rear out of a 72 torino, also earlier model (late 60'2) galaxies if you can find them. But the torino ones are still pretty available here.

If you get one out of a mid 70s LTD and cut the right side down so that both axles are the same length it will be about 1/2 inch wider than the original 10 bolt.

o5racer, do you know approximately how much to cut off the axle tube? I assume you mean take the tube out, cut it, then put it back in? How hard is it to take the tube out to begin with?

a 9" ford with a centered pinion will have the passengers side axle 4" longer than the drivers side. if you cut the passengers side down 4", you will have the pinion offset 2" to the passengers side after you center the housing.

you don't have to take the tube out. you can cut off the bearing cup, shorten the tube and re-weld the bearing cup onto the tube. it should be done with a jig to ensure that the bearing cup end is perpendicular to the axle tube.
