My oil pressure has been between 65-70 cold and goes up slightly with rpm. Then after a race when hot was around 30. Sat night sitting in line for the heat I looked at the guage and it was at 20, and the water temp was only at 160. I revved the motor up and the pressure dropped to 15. This got me worried, but I decided to keep an eye on it during the race.I checked it under caution and it was still at 20, and also at 20 when I pulled off after the race. I just wonder if maybe there's a problem with the pump, or maybe the guage. Thanks

D21, one of the first things someone will ask you is what weight oil your using ? The 60 to 70 lbs. of pressure at start up sounds good but once the oil gets hot at idle it should be AROUND 45 psi.. We have had problems with pressure guages also but make sure your oil is right for these hot racing nights. ALSO we had a filter collapse on the inside and gave those funny readings too ! Drop the oil replace it with s.a.e. 50 oil and put on a good filter. We use a a/c #1218 oil filter. See if that helps.

Thanks for the replies. The oil I use is Valvoline SAE 40 and the filter is a Fram TG5..the Tough Guard one. I've ran this combo for a couple years now and have never had a problem at all. I change the oil every 4 nights unless the motor gets over 220, then I change it for the next week. I run gas in the motor. It's a 327...not a big HP motor, but a little over stock. I'll change the oil & filter and see what that does. Thanks for the help.

Wix, Wix Racing, AC or Purolator are my filters of choice. I only use Fram filters for the 15 minute break in time 'cause they're cheap and can't take racing conditions.

Are you using Valvoline VR1 or regular Valvoline? I'd recommend VR1 if you're not using it already or a good Syn oil like Amsoil, Redline, Royal Purple or Mobil 1. With the Syn's, you can extend change intervals over dino oil. The syn's won't break down as quickly from heat.

Why do you say the Fram's can't take racing conditions? That's what I have been using for a couple years now. Never had a problem so far. Is there something about them I need to know about?

Fram filters use lower quality internal components. Flat metal spring, cardboard ends caps, lower quality media and anti-drainback valve. Under racing conditions (high rpm and generally more heat & vibration) it's not unusual for the insides of the filter to either come apart or distort blocking oil flow.

The Fram racing filters are good, but the general off the shelf stuff is garbage.

Just a couple of links to help you during future decision making on oil & filters.
http://www.micapeak.com/info/oiled.html
http://www.chris-longhurst.com/carbibles/index.html?menu.html&engineoil_bible.html

The bottom link is the most informative, but both are very good. You can also flollow the additional links to some filter information. This will help you in your decisions on which weight, when to change, & several different views on all brands of filters & oils.

Hope this helps, and good luck on the track!

Thanks Raz and Wind Walker, I didn't know that stuff. Looks like it's time to get a new filter.

Thanks again guys. Drained the oil & changed the filter. Couldn't see anything visually wrong with the filter, but fired up the engine and the pressure went right up to 65, so it had to be the problem. I put another Fram TG5 on there to use for now, but I'm gonna switch to something different. I've never had a problem in 2 years of running them, but once is enough for me.

Have you ever heard of a fram making a car knock. I have. The guy just changed the oil it would only knock once it was warm. He switched from the Fram filter and problem gone. This was in a street car a couple of years back. It is still around today with the same engine. I will easily run the Wal Mart special Super Tech instead of fram.
