Weird question here, I just swapped cases on a pair of 1.82 powerglides. Everything went well and simple. One had a cracked case and one had bad internals. After I got it all back in it has limited forward (slips but does pull forward slowly) reverse is pretty good but seems to lightly slip at first then goes ok. Can get about 10 feet forward and 10 feet back and then nothing in either gear. After it cools off, same thing all over again. Any ideas? I am not a tranny expert by any means but can rebuild them, just not sure of the diagnosis end of it.

First thing would be check the fluid. Low fluid or a plugged filter will cause the condition you describe. After that, it costs $$$. Could be as simple as dirt in the passages, but also could be low pressure (bad pump) or wasted clutches. Both of which cost some bucks to fix.

Double check the fluid, pull the lines off and run them into a bucket.. fire it up and see if the pump will empty the pan.

Just some ideas.

to me it sounds like you need to tighten the band. I think there is a jam nut near the shift linkage you can loosen, tighten the band some and then retighten the jam nut.

Finally just got back to it last night, it was the front pump was bad. Works like a champ now. Thanks Raz, I was confident that was it but needed some reassurance. A few more things to do and I will finally get to go to the track to break some things, lol. Just wanted to post what I found in case it helped someone diagnose theirs, Thanks again.
