I live in mid-michigan and the tracks i go too i have seen the street stock car counts go down a great deal over the last 2 years. The two tracks that I go to the most, dirt and pavement are only getting around 13 to 18 cars a night. Just wanting to know if other tracks are having lower car counts or is it just my area? Thanks

12-18 cars on an average night for IMCA-type street stocks. Same for the hobby stocks.

Our pure stock class usually has 20 - 26 cars. About 4 years ago, there were usually only 15 - 20. And the Amateur class has gotten bigger and bigger as well. Up from maybe 10 to 15 - 18 or so now.

And as the stock classes counts go up, the late model counts have dropped from 25 - 30 down to about 20 or so. The limited lates struggle to get 10 cars each week. Emods (UMPs) usually have 18 - 24 as well.

I guess as the cost of racing and tightening of sponsor's wallets, the 'lower' classes are attracting more and more people. Just my observations.

every track in the central and north ala area
seems to be having the same struggles except talledega short trk.
10 to 15 cars is the avg count sometimes up or down in any class,
go to talledega short and get treated like a
problem to be tolerated and there are 15 to 20 car counts. I dont understand the attraction its bump and run to win.
down here the track owners treat drivers
like a source of income only, thereby creating the animosity that is causing their poor car counts. I have NEVER seen any track sit down and spend any time with drivers/owners to discuss our needs. If one trk owner took the initiative and worked with the drivers constructively, they would probably drive two tracks out of business within two years. my opinion only, thanks for the stump time. bob

Light it up, Baby!

We are in the 40's here in N.Y. with 2 features every week. It is exciting to have that many entries, but it has also has sucked replacing 3 nosepiece's getting to the front week after week just from finishing well & starting in the back.

Bobaluuu -

That's just the street stocks. Its not uncommon to have over 100 cars when all divisions (Late Models, Modifieds, Sportman and Streets) are running. Heck, when the run the four bangers, 40 of those things alone show up. We're the only track in the area that runs on Friday, so the car counts are pretty healthy.

I think part of the problem is the gas prices making it hard to travel to the tracks. Are car count is almost not even half of what it used to be.

the last time they had WISSOTA street stock here, there was 8 cars nightly. They dropped that class and adopted a 305 purestock class. we get 40+ cars a night in just that class.

Between the 4 classes we average about 110 cars a night.

Southeast Texas:Street Stocks=10-15
Hobby stocks=18-30

The street stock class has gone down over the past few years,,,always changing the rules
Hobby Stocks--used to be Bombers we used to have 34-40 every week but changing rules and too many tracks in the area have hurt plus the pay is down and the expenses for us racers are up

we race Merritt speedway in northern Michigan. The car counts on any night are 50 - 60+. They run 4 classes Street, pro-truck, mod. and Late model. The average total count is 150+. The sport is huge here.

Just to clarify, Lakeside had 128 cars that week....

57 in Factory stocks.
The rest in grand nationals and Modifieds.

Its the best show in the area. usually 7000 fans show up to watch. I went to another track in Wichita KS this past weekend and while it was a good show, definately above average compared to most. Being there let me see how good Lakesides really is.

I'm from cincinnati and we race in the country. We get about 18 cars per week. Florence speedway in Kentucky has a pure stock that is struggling. We have 5 dirt tracks that all within 1 and 1/2 hours from our vicinity. Problem is they all have different rules trying to keep their local racers. I think street stock is the best racing because we have to try to make a car corner left with extreme limitations on what we are allowed to do, unlike a modified or late model. We had a late model guy run a bomber in a race as a tribute to the original driver who died from heart disease. He learned real quick that you just cant fly into the corner, slide it around, gas it and take off. He spun out 2 times in the heat and 1 in the feature. Late model pay out too much. Our fans are the ones who spend more money and bring more of their family and friends to the track. They think its exciting just to see someone in an old camaro or monte ss racing.
