We have been fighting a cutting out condition all season and can't seem to get it figured out.

We opened up the carb and it was full ****...also the backup carb we had tried to run was full of **** too.

So I pulled the fuel filter that was located just out of the fuel cell. It was a small inline filter that appeared to not be stopped up and flowed fine.

The catch is that it was installed backwards based on the recommended flow direction marked on the filter.

Would the filter installed incorrectly cause a problem?

Next I cut it open just to see what was inside since it had been flowing backwards and stuff was still getting to my carb. It was full of stuff including the foam from the cell foam inserts.

Should I move the filter to just before the carb?

Any suggestion on a filter?

i'v never installed one backwards so i can only guess what would happen. i would bet it would let stuff get into the fuel line.

i've installed fuel filter right after fuel cell
and i've installed it between fuel pump
and carb. as long as your lines are clean
it will not matter.

**** could be getting into the carb through the fuel bowl vent tube(s). make sure you have a good air cleaner installed with a tight seal around the bottom and top of the carb. you should also run a gasket between to top of the carb and the bottom of the air cleaner.

you need to solve this problem as if **** it
in your carb, it's also getting down into the cylinders, which means is scratching up your cylinder walls.

if you have foam coming thru it will need replaced as tends to dry up and disentigrate after so long. also a good filter to use if not using a racing one is off a tbi car, they are larger and can handle much more flow, and trap more dirt before clogging.
