i am wondering if anyone knows a place where i can get some really soft upper trailing arm bushings for a metric car? i am looking to put some soft ones on the top of the rear end. i know old stock ones are soft but i'd like something that isnt 20 years old yet still will work well.

Luke, here's what I'm using. They come off a 93-99 Camaro Z28, with a 1LE performace package.

See attached pic. Top arm. Rotate that bushing 1/4 turn and install in our upper control arms. Nice and soft

You can still buy the 1LE control arms from GM, with the bushings. And yes, these Camaro lower arms are exactly the same as our metrics, so you can use them too. Do a search on part number 10164151 at www.gmpartsdirect.com.

I don't have a part number for the actual bushing tho. But since you can use the lower arm too, it's not so bad.

Well, after a little searching, I think the part number is 10164152. Those are available at gmpartsdirect, but it shows a different bushing pic then what we're looking for.

thanks for the info. i currently have urethane with holes drilled in them...still way to hard for my liking.

hey stockcar5, have you had a chance to try out your drilled bushings on the track yet? If so let us know how they turned out.

i have run the drilled urethane since last yer. there work good but they still dont flex alot. that urethane is tough stuff. i think i am gonna get a set of those z/28 buhhings and see what happens.

Let me know if that part number for the bushings turns out to be the right one, I'll add to my "list" of part numbers.

Also, I drilled about six 1/8" holes in each bushing too, just to soften it a little more.

What would it hurt to leave the old, stinky, sloppy, dirty, yucky, wornout, rotten...uh...rust stained...lol...jk,
...what would it hurt to leave the original bushings in where you want it to flex? arent they pretty soft or they hard because of dry rotting? I know they look hard but I never really compared I just replaced... drill those bad dogs out a bit and roll... Just wondered... not sure whether they get hard or soft with age.

Why are you looking for soft bushings? arn't they unpredictable?

just looking for soft ones on top of the rear end. my theory is they act like a torque biskit on accell. i run urethane in the bottoms to better control roll steer and make the rear end movement more stable.

i know the old ones are soft but like i said...i dont always trust rotted out, 20 year old parts.

My problem is you are running a 4 link. The torque bisket is a three link where both sides are using one link for the top. On a 4 link all 4 are solid (like a late model) because with two bushings being used the application of the pressure is not the same on each side it is going to be irratic as far as rearsteer and it will be changing as the track dries.
It would be better to only use one side, the right the way an asphault car and the big block modifieds use a spring rod, to allow the rear to steer the car under throttle and help it out of the corner.

My opinion is that the eratic pinion change and unpredictable rear end movement would overcome any positive gains that could be hoped for. I gave up on all the little tricky things and concentrated on my driving
and setup. racing became fun again and victory circle has become a familiar place again.

bobaluuu I agree but if was going to do it I sure wouldn't do both! The right would let it trail on corner entry and steer off of the corner. BUT I am right with you on the driving part. If you keep trying all of the different stuff you never get to figure out what you have.

I agree guys. The upper control are bushings control side to side movement and having the rear move side to side gives the driver a very uneasy feeling. Have you ever had the holes in the arms wear out? It feels like driving over marbles. Stock bushings in lowers are fine and I am currently running urethane in one end (frame end) of uppers only. This class requires basic setups and lots of driving ability and I am always better when I concentrate on the basics.
