I brake my engine in with 50wt motor oil and was running 20w50 racing oil in it. Last summer I read an article in SCR about not needing to use that heavy of a weight of oil the article was talking about using 10w30 instead of the heavier oil because of less drag on the crank shaft. I'd say the 15w40 would be to heavy. In a nut shell hope this helps. Eddie

It all depends,if you have a stock type pan and no oil cooler or accumulator i'd run 50wt.As you cool the oil down with better capacity oil pans and coolers you can go with lighter weight oil and still keep the oil from breaking down.IMHO

The problem I see is the additives in the tractor oil would not be the same as in a regular engine oil. Not many tractors see alot of RPM and the demands are so much different from each engine, so I would think it would break down alot sooner than regular oil and WAY before racing oil. You might check an oil manufacturers website and get more specifics, I am by NO means an expert on this one. And as far as the heavy oils, I don't like using them because if you have tried to pour 50 weight oil out of the can when it is cold it is like STP. And when I have torn engines down after using strictly 50w, the crank bearings show alot of wear that you don't get with the thinner oils. Hope that helps, good luck.

I run Mobil 1 & my cousin runs Rotella 15/40. I tore both of them down this winter & could not tell any wear differance. Both have the same capacity oil system with no coolers.

my engine builder told us to break in the engine with 15w40 john deere oil and after the first show switch to synthetic 15w50, I asked him why john deere oil and he said that kendall 20w 50 used to be the oil of choice because of the zinc content in the oil, but a few years back the tree huggers got their hands on it and reconfigured the oil with no zinc, but they couln't touch the agricultural industry , and because john deere oil is designed specifically for off road machinery and still has zinc it works well for break in. don't ask me why. two years and two rookies that over revved them several times and still no engine failures. just another opinion, hope it comes in handy!!

I tried mobil.com and valvoline.com and all I could really see is racing oil has extra zinc and produces less friction for more Hp, although I am sure it is only few, just can't see 50 horses there, lol, the 15/40 is designed for the strret therefore less deposits and less evaporation. hope that hels again and hope you check out the sites to see. Again, no expert here. Good luck.
