this is the second time, same rear end. Car weight 3440lbs-9"ford, 28 spline. Cap or cover, for carrier bearing (looks like a main cap-holds all in place- like U strap) don't know what it's called- but keeps breaking into-dead center, Anyone have a clue what causes this?

Did you use the same axles with this center section? I've seen that happen when a car takes a lick and tweaks (bends) an axle. Just thinking out loud: The bearing caps seating good when you put them in? Or if its just a new center section then I would say its a tweaked axle. Roll a dollar bill through the ring and pinion and see if clearance is loose enough. *shouldn't cut the dollar bill* That would also check your carrier to make sure it isn't tweaked. chuck it in the lathe and test it?

I agree with JuliaFerrell, but I would not use a dollar bill, instead use a Zig Zag ciggarette paper. This way if it does cut it, you still have your dollar. HAHA

Also these caps are machined just like a main cap in an engine. ****You can't mix and match these things effectively****

had the same problem a few years back. between cheap gears and installing the spanners adjuster in correctly. put caps on snug then thread adjusters may need to adjust caps slightly with hammer to line up. hope this helps
