I was doing the same thing this weekend. I went to the tire shop and got a 5 gallon bucket of tire weights. Put them in a folgers can and put a weed burner on it pulled out the metal tabs and did what Sixwillin said, filled up a valve cover. Once it was set and cooled I drilled two 5/8 holes and bolted it in the car. Worked great and it was free other than the propane. 5 gallons of lead once melted down and the tabs thrown out was about 120 lbs.

I went to wal-mart and bought 300# of weight bench plates for 100 bucks. Went to home depot and got a peice of 3/4 all thread and welded it here and there, then just slide your weights on the all thread and lock them down wit a 3/4 lock nut. Easy to fine tune b/c you got from 2 1/2 to 25# plates to play with, its alot easier than trying to melt and bolt up lead.Just make sure you weld the all thread to something solid, not the floor, I welded in some pieces of 1/4 plate so the rod wouldent rip the floor or cage.
