I have a 1989 camaro. Has anyone had any experiance running a strut car.

If so has anyone ran kyb struts?

What is the diffreance between dirt and aspahlt setup. I am going to run asphalt. But there is no forum for asphalt guys.

Also why does everyone on dirt run so stiff of springs in there cars. 1000-1250lbs wow!!!

We run Heavier springs because a dirt track has a tendancy to get very rough.

A strut car is for the street, not the race track.I have seen a couple guys try strut cars on dirt,they did'nt fair to well.I'f you have'nt put much time or money in this car,get something else.

ran an 88 last year,good ,fast,easy, to drive car .folded up like a sheet on the second hard hit.run a search in the archives.plenty of info.the front clip is the weak spot,they bend just behind where the idler arm bolts.it was a very well built car.as for "struts are for the street"look at all the mustangs in the pits.its the wave of the future.as for springs 750lf 850rf.pmail me if your looking for parts,i have the driveshaft,torque arm bracket,springs,ect.buiding a 2nd gen camaro.wont be faster but should last longer

i agree te33. in the not so distant future, most of the stock type chassis racecars will be strut cars. look around.....2nd generation camaros are hard to find and gm metrics are next on the "endangered species" list.

I'm running a strut car too. On dirt. Hard to get info on settin' up one of these. I was able to install a weight jack on the right side but the left is a diff. story.Dont forget a strut tower brace. I made my own. I would take some spring recomendations though.

Another problem Im havin' with my 86' is the weight. The front is heavy 1600#s. Theres no where to shave off weight,Its all structural integrtiy. In order to get your percentages correct the car would weigh 4000#s.

I'm looking at buying an 84 Camaro, I still have my 80 Camaro that needs work and may end up racing anyway. But My reasoning on buying the 84 is more setup options on the rear. Anything I need to pay close attention to when checking the 84 out? Any input would be helpful.

just make sure it's not bent anywhere and look for frame straightening marks,if it was bent then straightened it will really bend next time! also make sure the fenders are straight and bolted up tight they actually help make the car more ridgid.stiffer springs are to keep you're car from unloading in corner,and on a rougher track you want softer springs not stiffer.just my opinion.

you want enough spring, to keep the pan and crossmember off the ground. then adjust from there.

guys tell me if i've sniffing brake dust to long;}but what if you cut the top off of the "frame"ha,ha,in the front and welded some 2x3 into the channel,making a "clip",and then tack the top back on to make it appear "stock"?lot of work!but if this was easy ,everybody do it!gotta do something,we are out of 2nd gens.

My tracks been open 2 years. It says stock body and frame. Dosent say you cant reinforce the holy **** out of it. I also say La Mans starts be mandatory,LOL

te33, it can be done somewhat like your saying. its a lot of work.

if you do it you need to go all the way with the 2*3 to the rear spring mts. then youd have basically a full fab frame. but if you dont do it all it will bend wherever you stop.

I built an 84 firebird and had alot of success with the car at the local tracks. I am currently building an 88 trans-am and on this car I am going to try and run the struts. The last car "the 84" I took the factory struts, drilled them out,drained all of the fluid. Then cut the main tubes down an inch and a half (because of using the hypercoils springs which lowered the car) and then gave them a healthy coating of anti seize and welded the tubes back up. I know your thinking this would never work but stick with me on this... I then cut a nice hole in the frame horns and slid tubing down in the holes and welded it up to where it was flush on the top of the frame rail and on the bottom. Make sure your tubing is large enough for a shock to fit through without rubbing. Then as you all have noticed the lower A arm already has the mount in it so bolt your shock up to that like the old style camaro's and make a shock upper mount in your tube ( I used the pro shocks that had the two bolts on the bottom and the one nut on the shaft at the top) If this isn't legal at your track paint the shock black and make a cap for the hole in the top of your frame horn. Paint the cap the same color as the frame. remember the shock is in the center of the spring so if the spring is a nice pretty color it hides the flat black shock. I would also recomend painting the strut a nice bright color too. The strut is now used for caster and camber only. I moved mine all over the place especially that R/F. I raced this car for two years and it was bought from me and raced another year and still has the same struts in it. But that was before some of these strut manufacturers started making adjustable racing struts so I think I am going to try a pair of them this time around but if they don't work I'll know how to fix it!! sorry about the long post!

I have plenty of pics of this car while I was building it and after it was built. The car was crashed hard a couple of times but I eventually learned how to stiffen then weak front frame rails up. If you got any questions or helpful info on racing a 3rd gen. f-body let me know I appreciate what help I can get or offer.

You might find some valueable information at the Road Racing forum for F-bodies.

They definitely can give you information for going around both left and right corners.
