Steel is better, I've been useing a cast crank for the past 4 or 5 years and haven't had any trouble, but then again it's only a flat top 355 too. I'm going to a scat crank next because it's cheaper that steel but stronger that cast.

I was told that you couldn't balance a cast crankvery well, is there ant truth to that?

no truth to that, and i think a aftermarket steel is better but not a oem 1053 steel crank, they wont flex like cast and crack easily..

ive ran a lot of cast with 12.5 comp no problems... 6500 rpm max for me!!

a friend of mine has a balanced stock crank in his 13:1 360. Ran it all season between 6500 and 6800 with no problems at all.

I've run cast & steel hi & lo rpm, blown both hi & lo rpm, your guess is as good as mine.

I would say the steel is definetly stronger and will hold up better for the long run but you can get by with a cast crank for awhile.
Balancing will help a lot and anything else to help take out some bad harmonics i.e. good balancer, driveshaft, and fan.

We ran a cast 350 crank in a 12.5:1 377 and revved it up to 7400 on occasion. I would just make sure and have it checked for cracks at rebuild time if not between rebuilds just to be safe.

I've had 2 different people tell me that they ran scat cranks until they broke several.....
