I've been told that sprints need more stagger because of the wide tires. I can't see why.
Any opinions?

Partly true due to width of tires. Stagger is generally used to change handling...
loosen with more stagger and tighten with less stagger.

Winged sprints operate off the LR tire and non-winged sprints operate off the RR tire.

yes they do usually run alot more stagger than say, a late model. sprintcars will regularly run 12 - 17 inches.
you will also find that some brands of right rear tires are tappered, to help with your "stagger triangle" and maximise tire contact patch.
