Came across what I think is a 7.5 rear end yesterday that is about twice as heavy as the 7.5's I have been using. Havent taken the cover off yet but why would this be so much heavier than other rear ends I have been using? It looks like its made about the same as the others except this one has aluminum brake drums. Any Ideas why so heavy???

Dont think so.....It is unusually heavy for some reason. Just wondering if anyone else had seen one of these.

I was told one time that the Buick Regel came with aluminum drums.

Some Regal Grand Nationals and T-types and also a few 442 Cutlasses came with a 10 bolt 8.5" center section that fits a Metric chassis. Is it possible that you have one of those?

If you s****e / clean the axle tube on the front side passenger side it should have a code stamped on it and that should help you decode it as to what its from.

I believe its about 6 to 12 inches from the center and its faces toward the front of the car.

Monte,

could the number be a 2BA not an R?

that code would be for a 7.5 rear with a 2.56 gear with a posi carrier.

Found that info here: http://www.442.com/oldsfaq/ofdif.htm

Bout halfway down on the right side it shows some axle codes.

Well, I checked again and its definately an R. It kinda has a space after the first number so not sure if its a missing letter or just a space. Anyway it is:

2 RAK 074
