I have a new set of valve covers with triangular vents at the bottom of the vent tubes. My question is, does the opening point down or up, or does it matter?

Are these one that you weld the tube onto the cover? If so, the open end goes towards the top with the vent going to the bottom where yu weld it on.

Point the opening up away from the bottom. Thats where the oil sits so yah point it away.

I would say point the openings down towards the motor. It you pointed them upward, they would act like a cup and catch oil. If you pointed them the other direction then it would drain out when it splashed up there.

point em down. 17's right, if you point em up, the tubes will collect oil. Also, i mashed mine in a little bit more. This keeps oil from soaking the breathers. Just dont go to far, about an 1/8 in or so gap is what you want.
