I've read several posts on wiring the starter and ignition.

The question I have is what gage wiring does everyone use from the battery to the starter and from the battery to the distributor?

Is 10 gage right for both of these? Or should we go up? What are the advantages of going up?

thats close but run the wire to the push button off the pos side of the soliniod instead of off the battery.shortens that wire up makes it 2 ft instead of 10. make sure you have a good ground on the motor to the chassis . this setup will alow you to turn the motor over without it firing untill you hit the toggle switch helps for setting valves.and when you have a locked hei it helps it start alot easier

good point!

Thanks for the drawing...but what gage wiring is all of that? Is it all 10? What about the ground wire from the battery - do you use 0,2,4, or 6 gage? Also, is there a 2nd wire large (0,2,4,6 gage) from the starter back to the frame, or battery?

Your chassis electrical wiring can be either 12 or 10ga. The wiring that powers the starter should be a minimun of 2ga., any more than about 0ga., and you are wasting money. All the connections that I do are soldered in place. You can buy the correct solder on ends at most any auto parts stores. It is also helpful to put some sort of anti corrosion compound at ALL points. This will help ensure that you are not getting a bad connection later. As for grounding you should have a wire of the same gauge going from the battery to the cage (make sure to prepare the surface) and one from the cage or frame to the engine.

Hope this helps.

Thanks for the updates on the diagram - next question is where do I get 8 feet of 2 gage wire? I looked at AutoZone, Advance, and O'Reillys, and they only have around 5 to 6 feet. Can you splice two of theirs together?

mine are actually welding leads you can get that at a welding supply store, napa should have it by the roll or maybe even lowes or home depot or an electrical supply store. you can splice two togather but you will be creating a problem point in the future (corrosion, bad connetion etc....)

One last question: Where does everyone place the wires coming off the starter - over the top of the starter, or underneath it? Just curious which location is safest and will keep the heat from the exhaust manifolds off the 2 wires.
