I drive a 77 Monte Carlo -current weight is 3700 pounds. I have around 125 lbs added in the trunk, that I could get rid of, but not sure if I should keep it for traction purposes in the rear. Weight limit in pure stocks is 3300. Any suggestions on where to start cutting? I don't want to cut any areas that would hurt the safety aspects of the car.

Depends on how much the rules will allow.

Look for anything on the front or right side that can be axed. Even little things can add up. Within reason, leave everything on the back and left side since you want weight there.

I found the wiper motor shelf was worth 5 lbs. The right side door post (where the hinges goes) was worth about 25 lbs. Trimming the A pillars was worth another 5-7 lbs. You can keep going and hack the right side rocker panel out which would be another 15 lbs or so. Running lightweight wheels on the front could be another 5 lbs each and a LW spool in place of a mini spool is another 7-10 lbs, which is worth about triple that in handling (unsprung weight is more important than sprung weight)

Basically anything that doesn't look like it's needed, cut off. You should be able to find 100 lbs of junk pretty easily.

Thanks for the idea - am I being too idealistic to find 350-400 pounds to remove off a big car?

Nope...I have a friend that races the same monte and we have to weigh 3500 lbs with driver, and hed cam in at 3420. he didnt gut a whole lot but did have the trunk floor gutted and the rubber body mounts were out, the roof was gutted and inside the rear quaters between the door and wheel well. It is possible to get the weight down on a big boat. Good luck.

if you havent already and rules allow it, make sure you get rid of the whole radiator support!! theres a ton of weight there and also gut the fenders, hood, dash and even the roof, heck take a hole saw and go craszy with it, if youve got a good solid cage gut everthing that the rules will allow, go over the entire car for those lil brackets and bolts that are not needed and s**** em, youll be surprised at how heavy a lil pile of nuts and bolts are....oh yeah and then theres always YOU goin on a diet!!

oh ya....that reminds me....my buddies car also had the heavy insides of the bumpers gutted out....he just bolted the chrome to the mounts. those bumpers are quite strong enough on there own....or if you wanted could gut them and weld a piece of pipe there then bolt the chrome over it. Those bumpers are heavier the he11, should get you down some.

I think that sleepy said in one of his articles that the ant-vibration material on the floors of the car was worth like 25 lbs. You can remove it with dry ice. Freeze it then hit it with a hammer just remember to wear saftey goggles.
