If you start with a 78 monte thier old style goes until 80. Then the body stays the same until 88 (the monte's are pretty much on the newer style body. If you stays with the same car, the bodies are kinda the same through the years but if you try to put a cutlass fender on a monte, there's gonna be some difference. Regals as the same way, the older 78 models look just a bit different in the fender area. But, all the frame components are the same from axle to axle.

the car appears to be '78 cutlass - so do I need to limit my search to '78 -'80 cutlass or could I, for example, use a '88 front clip on the '78 car? Could I use a whole monte front clip on a cutlass? I understand I cant intermingle fenders but would I be okay to swap a whole front clip from a different model? Thanks-

All the core supports are the same from 78-88 so the fenders would sit up in the same place. The only problem I would see is the gap between the door and the front fenders might not line up exactly but, you could easly cover that up with sheet metal. Since your using an 88 hood, and fenders, the hood to fender lines would all match and look fine. Other than that, I wouldnt see a problem.

The 78 to 80 monte front fenders and hoods are different than the rest of the metrics but aside from that all fenders, doors and hoods interchange fine, the rear quarters around the "opera" window is the only spot you'll see the differance.

the clips should go on fine, but your body lines will not match, you will be able to tell they are different makes/model year. but they will interchange.

I have a car right now that started out as a monte that needed a front clip and the only sheet metal I could find was a cutlass. we put on the fenders, doors and hood and it looks pretty good, just different enough that people wonder what we did.
