You should check more into your cam. A lot of performance type cams already have 4 degrees advance ground in them. If that's the case, it should make your choice a lot easier (and I most likely wouldn't retard it any).

advancing the cam moves the power range up the rpm scale.

No it doesn't.
It gives more low end.
people advance them to make up for a big duration cam to get more power off the corners.

Thats right advance the cam = more bottom end, retard cam = more top end
