are you running the transmission is low or high

if low then you want the detent cable pulled tight to help keep the upshift at a higher range or not at all

if your running high pulling the detent cable will make the transmission shift at a very high RPM so you would want it not pulled at all so it wouls shift to high as soon as possible

We are running in high gear.I called my tranny builder. He said if I do not hook it back up, I will burn up the tranny. I'm just worried about it over reving? The car is set up to be held wide open.

when the detent cable is hooked up in stock position (normal operation) when you push the gas pedal it shifts the transmission down to a lower gear for passing.you can run without it hooked up but you have to manually downshift to get into the lower gear and it shifts upward faster to high gear.
i run low gear so i pull it tight and zip tie it off so it will stay longer in low gear if rpms is what your worried about i run 7800 - 8200 in low gear and run trannys for about 2 seasons

Leaving the cable off won't fry this tranny, built many of these for street rides and they don't have the t.v. hooked up. They have to be manually downshift. Now a 700r4 will fry without the t.v. hooked up.

i run in high gear, with a 5.67 gear the reason i hooked it up was last year the manual shifts would get a jump at the start of the race. i was hoping this would let it down shift so they would not get that jump.what are your opinions?

it is still going to take it a bit to down shift i would get use to shifting it from second to high and get better at it with the detent cable it could go all the way to low and that could hurt you more than help

sounds like if the tranny guy told you it would burn up it is not a detent cable. the 2oo4r is the metrick version of the 350 it has a tv cable that does have to be set correctly. check your pan to see if it says metrick on it. if so set the cable so that with the throttle wide open you are pulling the cable all the way out. this cable controls the shift point up to the governor and the fluid pressure so do not run it with out it bieng hooked up without doing any valve body modifications.

also if it shifts too high or too low go to your tranny builder and tell him what rpm you want to run and have him set you up with the correct governor. think that there is 3 different governors one a 4500 5500 and a 6500.

You need to have it setup where it will engage right on the floor
