If you do get a mini spool for a GM rearend get ONLY a coleman brand. Those Black anodized off brand ones are not worth the deposit of the pop cans they were made of. Plus they fit like ****!

In my experince with a 9", the mini spool doesn't engage the axles as far either. Like 3/4"-1" worth of splines. A full spool engages another 1/2"-3/4" for about 1.5" total. They'll alos a bunch stronger if you race where there's alot of bumping and banging.

We've broken 4 mini spools in 4 years. Last year I put a full spool in my car at the beginning of the year and it's still going strong.

Full spools don't have the cross pin. If you happen to break an axle at the splines you can knock the broken end of the axle out in a full spool without removing the third member.
