I have a freshened up sbc350. I went from a TH350 trans to a 3 speed trans. I used the same starter(from the TH350 trans.)and the starter just spins, not even touching the flywheel. Do I need a different starter? Do I add shims(whole or half shims)? The block I have is the offset bolt pattern for the starter.Any response would be helpful.

Shim the side closest to the frame. Only use half of a shim not a whole.

Count the teeth on your Old Flex Plate then count the teeth On Your new Flywheel, Chev Make 2 Sizes. Then Go to Parts Store And have Them Look Up Flywheel Ring Gear Aplications And Read #of Teeth in The Description . then buy new Starter For The Car That Has Same Amount Of Teeth That You Do.

they make big and a small flywheel, One starter has the bolt holes across from each other[one long bolt and one short bolt] and the other one has the bolt holes stagered.[2long bolts]

My block has holes for the staggered bolt pattern, I guess Im going to have to drill it. I looked through the archives and found somebody with the same problem and they said they found a starter off a 79 monte carlo, I might try that first.
